The Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida (USF) invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biomedical Anthropology to begin August 7, 2024.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to our new BS in Biomedical Anthropology, as well as to our graduate concentration in Biocultural Medical Anthropology and to our concurrent degree program with USF’s College of Public Health. The successful candidate will join a department with a four-field approach at the undergraduate level and an MA and PhD in Applied Anthropology. Position is open until filled, with initial review of applications beginning on November 15, 2023.

The successful candidate should: (1) demonstrate the potential for generating a strong track record in peer-reviewed publishing and grant-funded research, and (2) be prepared to contribute to a department with a strong emphasis on quality of teaching. Research interests should complement existing strengths in the department, and align with one or more of USF’s Areas of Strategic Focus (https://www.usf.edu/strategic-plan/about/strategic-areas-of-focus/index.aspx). Geographic area is open but should complement expertise within the department.

We seek a colleague who examines the connection between biological and cultural aspects of human health and wellness among contemporary humans. Potential topics for research include (but are not limited to): Health disparities, Human biology, Reproductive health, Race and racism, Climate change and health, Mental and behavioral health, and Infectious and non-communicable diseases. Colleagues who utilize biomarkers in their research, facilitate research which is community-based, participatory, or inherently applied, and are adept at training undergraduate and graduate students with such approaches are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester, which will include graduate and undergraduate courses in biological and/or medical anthropology such as Health, Illness and Culture (undergrad), Human Variation (undergrad), Theory and Methods in Medical Anthropology (grad), Theories in Applied Bioanthropology (grad), and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in their field of specialization. The successful candidate should also be prepared to teach general introductory courses such as the four-field Introduction to Anthropology, Cultural and/or Biological Anthropology, and Exploring Cross-Cultural Diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD in Anthropology or Applied Anthropology. Applications from ABDs will be accepted, but the degree must be conferred by appointment start date. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor.
