Norma Kershaw Chair in the Archaeology of Ancient Israel and Neighboring Lands - Associate or Full Professor

The Department of Anthropology at UC San Diego invites applications for an Associate or early stage Full Professor to begin as soon as July 1, 2023.

We seek a distinguished archaeologist to occupy the Norma Kershaw Chair in the Archaeology of Ancient Israel and Neighboring Lands. The aim of the chair is to ensure that teaching and research in and about this region continue to be led by a prominent scholar at UCSD. The successful candidate must have a distinguished publication history and a record of outstanding research, competitive grants, and excellence in teaching. A history of long-term archaeological research based in Israel and adjacent nations is essential, and the successful applicant must be a project director who has and will continue to work with students in the field in and beyond Israel. We expect the candidate to have knowledge of the language(s) necessary to conduct research in Israel and neighboring lands. The gift supporting the Norma Kershaw Chair is part of the Jewish Studies Endowment, administered by the UC San Diego Foundation, and housed in the School of Social Sciences.

Archaeological research in our department currently focuses on complex societies, environmental and maritime archaeology, and cyberarchaeology, but we welcome applicants who bring a wide variety of approaches and methods. We look for innovative perspectives developed from the understanding of the deep past that can be applied to contemporary issues and crises. We encourage applications from archaeologists working in a variety of periods.

We especially welcome candidates whose professional experience, community engagement, and personal background have facilitated their understanding of, and ability to, better serve students from traditionally underrepresented communities in higher education. Faculty are expected to have a track record of inclusive approaches to mentoring and advising.
