The Anthropology Department invites applications for a an Temporary Forensic Anthropology and Bioarcheology Assistant Professor to oversee teaching three courses per term, including introductory courses, upper-division courses and graduate seminars. Course content will include introductory biological anthropology (lecture and lab), osteology, bioarcheology, forensic anthropology, and other subjects in biological anthropology as needed.

Research and service expectations include:

* A willingness to supervise forensic casework from the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula. * Serving on topically-related graduate committees. * Mentoring students in the forensic anthropology and bioarcheology areas.   Required Qualifications:

* A Ph.D. (before August 2023) with an emphasis in Biological Anthropology * Evidence of teaching experience * A research agenda in bioarchaeology or skeletal biology as evidenced by funding, publications, presentations, and projects Evidence with forensic anthropological casework that demonstrates an ability to apply osteological and forensic skills to law enforcement cases. This includes, but isn’t limited to training or experience in some, or all, of the following: * Forensic casework and field recovery. * Communication and coordination with forensic laboratories and law enforcement. * Writing forensic cases reports. * The role of the expert witness when called to court, based on a case.   Preferred Qualifications:

* Strong teaching ability as demonstrated through experience, student evaluations, and teaching philosophy. * Experience teaching lab and online classes. * Professional experience as the primary investigator in forensic cases. * Working toward certification as a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. * Research that could incorporate student participation. * A geographic focus that enhances the department, preferably within western North America.

The Department of Anthropology is a four-field unit of 13 tenured faculty members and one lecturer located in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Approximately 130 undergraduates choose anthropology as a major and around 70 graduate students are working on an M.A. or Ph.D. in Anthropology. Additionally, the Department administers a Linguistic program; an Anthropology Minor; and several certificates, including one for Forensic Science. Current research interests in the Department include forensic anthropology; ancient and modern DNA analysis methods to address questions of anthropological and forensic interest; indigenous communities and the archaeology of Western North America; language preservation and revitalization; and cultural heritage studies.
