Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for teaching upper and lower division courses in Biological Anthropology with a specialization in Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology. Responsibilities include teaching existing courses for a 3:3 teaching load, both day and evening courses. Required courses to teach include Introduction to Biological Anthropology and Lab, Human Skeletal Biology, Human Ecological Adaptation, Forensic Anthropology, and/or Senior Practicum/Project, plus related courses in areas of one’s expertise. In addition to teaching within their disciplines, all faculty members at UHWO are expected to engage in scholarly activity, participate in curriculum development, provide service to the profession and broader community, teach courses using distance methods, advise students and supervise senior projects, practicum and readings courses, and participate in faculty governance. The person hired will oversee the continued development of the Certificate in Applied Forensic Anthropology, serving as its primary advisor and recruiter. Related job responsibilities entail managing the forensic and archaeology lab space. They will also work closely with faculty at the nearby Leeward Community College, as well as with organizations that include the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine, the Department POW/MIA Accounting Agency (a unit of the U.S. Department of Defense) at nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam, and the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office. Duties for this position also include creating opportunities for students to assist with forensic casework.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Earned doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in Biological Anthropology, with a specialization in Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology. -Evidence of high-quality teaching and potential for conducting relevant scholarly and applied research. -Ability to effectively communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. -Field and/or laboratory experience in Forensic Anthropology.

Desirable Qualifications:

-Experience teaching in an undergraduate Anthropology program, offering courses in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. -ABFA Board Certification or must show evidence of being in the process of working towards completion of the ABFA exam. -Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting; experience teaching and working with highly diverse communities. -Demonstrated ability to teach distance education courses. -Proven ability to write and/or administer grants is also highly desirable. -Commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawai‘i to position the university as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution.
