Assistant Professor in Anatomy Department of Biomedical Sciences University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus

About the Job: The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus, is seeking a dynamic and ambitious Assistant Professor to participate in teaching gross anatomy to medical students and to participate in scholarly activity and publish in their chosen area of interest. Candidates are expected to have at least one year experience teaching human anatomy at the college or university level and a record of scholarly activity commensurate with their career stage.

Required qualifications: • PhD, MD/DO or equivalent terminal degree in biomedical sciences or a related field from an accredited institution • One year experience in teaching human anatomy at the college or university level • Record of scholarly activity or training including peer reviewed publications commensurate with career stage.

Primary focus for this position is teaching with the expectation that the selected candidate will also participate in scholarly activity

Preferred Qualifications: • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Potential for collaborative teaching and research with University of Minnesota faculty • Active current research program as gauged by number and quality of recent peer-reviewed publications and/or funding • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and a demonstrated interest in training underrepresented minorities

Preferred Teaching Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in: • Teaching anatomy in a medical school or health professional school • Working in a team with students and/or faculty groups • Teaching neuroanatomy or embryology • Design, implementation and evaluation of anatomy curriculum in a medical school environment • Use of lecture, small group, lab, PBL and other non-lecture based teaching methods • Use of technology-based approaches to teaching anatomy • Use of cadaveric specimen-based approach to teaching anatomy

• Knowledge of LCME accreditation standards related to anatomy • Teaching awards

Responsibilities may include: • Teaching human gross anatomy, human developmental anatomy and imaging to first and second year medical students • Working with a team of faculty in evaluation, innovative development and integration of anatomy curriculum aimed at lecture and non-lecture based learning for first and second year medical students • Lab management duties related to gross anatomy lab • Conducting scholarly activity with a regular record of peer reviewed publications in biological research or educational scholarship • Obtaining funding appropriate to maintaining scholarly activity in the chosen area of expertise • Service to the Medical School and the profession

In addition, our programs are focused on training of Native Americans and Underrepresented Minorities into research and health professional careers with a K-12 Native American Science Education outreach program and Native American and Minorities into Biomedical Research program (NIH Bridges) to facilitate a transition of underrepresented minorities from community colleges to undergraduate institutions. The department consists of 25 faculty with expertise in a wide range of disciplines, from molecular and cell biology to physiology, pharmacology, infectious diseases and pathology. Our goal is the advancement of learning and knowledge through multidisciplinary scholarship; and delivery of the basic science curriculum for medical, graduate and undergraduate students.
