LECTURER: BIOMEDICAL FORENSIC SCIENCES (Permanent) Division of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology Department of Pathology Faculty of Health Sciences The Division of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at the University of Cape Town is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Biomedical Forensic Sciences. This is a permanent full time appointment and offers the opportunity to be part of the exciting Honours, Master’s and PhD programmes in Biomedical Forensic Science. We are particularly seeking a committed individual who will grow with the team and the development of our expanding programmes. We hope to attract someone who has a track record in research outputs and can effectively manage a high postgraduate student supervision load. The successful candidate will report to programme convenor/line manager (Dr Laura Heathfield) and carry out annual performance reviews (HR174). Start date is 1 January 2022 or earlier. Requirements: • Doctoral degree in a relevant biomedical forensic sciences field, or Doctoral degree in a core science with a MSc/MPhil in a relevant forensic science discipline. o Candidates in designated groups who are within 1 year of completion of their doctoral degree might be considered. • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate relevant teaching and research experience. Advantageous if this experience is in one or more of the following: forensic genetics, forensic entomology, forensic toxicology or other relevant biomedical forensic sciences field. • Track record of successful postgraduate student supervision and publications in national or international peer-reviewed, accredited forensic science journals. • Displays integrity in research and abides by principles of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). • Evidence of strong administrative skills, organisational skills and computer skills. • Ability to strive under high workload, both independently and within a team. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Self-motivated, dedicated and takes appropriate initiative. The following will be advantageous: • Knowledge of and experience in curriculum design. • A record of securing external funding as principal investigator. • Track record of forensic practice and casework experience. • Membership with professional bodies and/or learned societies in forensic science practice. • Knowledge of quality management systems and good laboratory practice. • Experience in a biosafety level 2 laboratory setting. • A record of contributions to Outreach activities and of Social Responsiveness. Responsibilities: • Teaching and supervision within Biomedical Forensic Science postgraduate programmes. o Including course convening, teaching and assessment for ‘Applied Forensics’ (Masters), ‘Forensic Entomology’ (Honours) and ‘Medico-legal death investigation (Honours). • Participate in internal quality management of educational programmes. • Lead a research group, initiate research, write research proposals and funding applications. • Collaborate with other researchers, internally and externally, in terms of carrying out interdisciplinary biomedical forensic science research. • Contribute to management of projects, funds, laboratories, equipment and databases within the Division. • Support the Biomedical Forensic Science programme convenor. • Carry out associated administrative duties. • Contribute towards social responsiveness activities, and support service delivery. • Participate in committees and continuing staff development.
