Stories of Ancient Resilience (SOAR), A Flagship Project of the Planet Texas 2050 Bridging Barriers Grand Challenge, seeks an outstanding postdoctoral fellow to contribute to the acquisition and analysis of ancient DNA from human and animal remains in the new ancient DNA laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. The researcher will work primarily under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Melissa Kemp in the Department of Integrative Biology ( http://www.thekemplab.com ) but will also work closely with Dr. Dan Breecker (Geological Sciences), Dr. Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach (Geography and Environment), and Dr. Adam Rabinowitz (Classics), as well as several colleagues at UT and other institutions who are part of the SOAR flagship project.

We seek candidates with a strong background in sampling, extracting, and analyzing ancient DNA using next generation sequencing technology. Prior experience working with human and/or animal remains is required. Prior experience in isotope geochemistry and archaeology are preferred, and the ideal candidate will have experience synthesizing and integrating genetic data with other archaeological, paleontological, or geochemical data types.

SOAR is an interdisciplinary, diverse group of researchers spanning various research units at UT Austin, with several external research partners. SOAR integrates quantitative scientific methods, qualitative results of archaeological and historical investigations and non-Western ways of knowing to explore past mobility and resource management at times of stress. The team aims to challenge existing narratives about societal resilience and develop new ways of thinking about how resilience can be fostered equitably in the future. SOAR incorporates a specific focus on equity, and seeks to co-develop research with multiple stakeholder groups, including Indigenous communities.
