Job Summary
Macaque Breeding Colony Manager
The Breeding Colony Manager reports to the Colony Administrator overseeing the SNPRC specified Breeding Colony. The Breeding Colony Manager assists with all aspects of colony oversight. Major Duties and Responsibilities Participates in strategic long-term management planning for the SNPRC breeding colonies. Tracks and ensures accuracy of breeding colony census and statistics for Colony Administrator. Monitors and documents breeding productivity and other colony health benchmarks Works with Colony Administrator to select future breeders, compose breeding groups using compatibility data, genetic data, ancestry data, and reproductive history. Monitors colony pathogen surveillance and clinical diagnostic results. Monitors colony inventory, updates histories and assessments for future research assignments. Assists with colony reporting needs and SNPRC Consortium data collection and presentations. Assists in research planning meetings to comment on requested animal specifications, and identifies suitable candidate animals for study. Schedules and oversees preventative health care for the breeding colony. Identifies and helps plan social cohort processing to maintain compliance with the preventative health program. Collects pertinent data on colony health, pregnancy status, and clinical follow-up required; documents this information and assists with any planning and scheduling needs related to findings. Manages the weaning offspring and monitoring in the immediate post-weaning phase. Coordinates pre-project planning, screening, and relocations. May attend SNPRC Breeding Colony Management Consortium meetings (monthly teleconference; annual in-person) Assists clinical Veterinarians and other staff by conducting historical record reviews, kinship comparisons, behavioral observations, and other duties as needed. Responsibilities may expand to other general colony management areas as assigned by supervisor. Activities Requiring Direct Involvement with Animals: •Conducts regular rounds in the colony to monitor census, births, and housing needs. •Participates with Behavioral management to monitor social interactions of groups, assessment and implementation of enrichment or training programs. •Participates in preventative health care to assist with clinical data collection. •Participates in pre-assignment processes such as screening, pre-project physicals, and relocation. Activities Involving Primarily Data Management: •Updates census information such as births, deaths, changes to breeding groups, moves, etc. •Updates birth information and assigning ID numbers. •Monitors production and clinical histories. •Compiles medical history data for assignment to research projects. •Compiles and monitors colony health data. •Advises on maintenance, renovation, and construction of colony-specific buildings •Tracks animal participation in genetic characterization programs Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Required: Bachelor of Science in laboratory animal medicine, veterinary pathology, zoology, anthropology or related discipline. At least five years of experience in animal lab operations or animal facilities management. Must have experience working with an active NHP breeding colony. Preferred: Master of Science in laboratory animal medicine, veterinary pathology, zoology, anthropology or related discipline. A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or DVM) is ideal. Experience using computer and other technology in management highly preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications AALAS Certificate at the LATg level or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) preferred. Other appropriate combinations of education and experience will be considered.
This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
