Postdoctoral Position in Field-based Social Science: The Human Sociality Lab (HSL; www.pisor-lab.com) at Washington State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to study collective action around coastal fisheries management in Tanzania. The postdoc will work primarily with PI Dr. Anne Pisor in the WSU Department of Anthropology in Pullman, WA, and on site in Zanzibar, Tanzania, but will also collaborate closely with co-PI Dr. Monique Borgerhoff Mulder (https://anthropology.ucdavis.edu/people/fzborger) and collaborating organization Mwambao Coastal Community Network (https://www.mwambao.or.tz/). This work is part of a larger research program studying long-distance social relationships from an evolutionary perspective; see the HSL website for more details.

Summary of Duties: As a co-leader in a three-year, NSF-funded field project (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2020501), the postdoc will work closely with Drs. Pisor and Borgerhoff Mulder. The postdoc will take a lead role in implementing the project, including managing the field research team and maintaining strong relationships with participating communities. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop their own research foci in ways that complement the project. Field research will include quantitative and qualitative data collection in individual interviews and focus groups. In Pullman, the postdoc will work in together with Dr. Pisor to design data collection methods, analyze data, and co-write papers. The postdoc will also have opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students if they desire.

Required Qualifications: The candidate must have obtained their PhD prior to the start date.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be skilled at working both as an independent researcher and as part of a research team, have experience conducting field research at remote sites with living people, and have demonstrable skills in oral and written communication (including a strong publication record). A background in evolutionary social science, the science of sustainability or conservation, quantitative anthropology or sociology, and/or collective action problems is preferred. Highly desired are proficiency in Swahili (or strong language-learning skills), strong analytical skills (especially in R), and experience living or working abroad.
