Background: The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22.

As part of a University-wide, multiyear hiring initiative designed to diversify the faculty, the department seeks a biological anthropologist with expertise in medical anthropology. We are especially interested in candidates who take a holistic, community-centered approach to human health and inequality, including innovative research on global/local health disparities in living people, health outreach and education, and/or ethics and inequities. Applicants should describe how their research advances community-based collaboration, equity, and justice, as well as how their work articulates with Loyola’s undergraduate programs in Public Health and/or Biology. Consistent with our commitments to affirming diverse perspectives and growing our faculty to better represent our student demographics and those of the city of Chicago, we especially welcome applicants from under-represented communities and social positions. We also encourage applications from scholars committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the successful pursuit of external grants. The successful candidate will be joining a department with eight full-time faculty members, and over 140 majors and minors. For more information about the department, please visit https://www.luc.edu/anthropology.

Duties and Responsibilities: We seek candidates with an excellent record of teaching and research, and a deep commitment to undergraduate education. Candidates will be expected to teach two courses per semester centered in the life/natural sciences, contribute to and develop interdisciplinary initiatives that enhance collaboration between Life and Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Humanities, and serve on Departmental committees. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants.

Minimum Qualifications: The candidate will have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Special Instructions to Applicants: Candidates should submit to www.careers.luc.edu (1) a brief letter of interest; (2) a current Curriculum Vitae; (3) a statement outlining the applicant’s research agenda; (4) a statement on teaching experience; and (5) a statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to mentoring a diverse student body through research, teaching and other channels, and engaging a diverse community through scholarship and service. Letters of recommendations will be requested after a preliminary selection process has been completed. Candidates are welcomed to upload additional materials to www.career.luc.edu related to teaching excellence and samples of scholarly publications. Questions can be directed to

Kristin Krueger, Ph.D., Search Committee Chair [email protected] Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. LUC is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty. The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity – including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment – is critical to achieving the University’s mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and services in an increasingly diverse society. Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual’s record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also favorably factor experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, we seek candidates who will contribute to our strategic plan to deliver a transformative education in the Jesuit tradition. To learn more about LUC’s mission, candidates should consult our website at www.luc.edu/mission. For information about the university’s focus on transformative education, they should consult our website at www.luc.edu/transformativeed.
