The Department of Anthropology at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Andean Archaeology. Diverse and innovative theoretical perspectives are encouraged, especially those related to thematic clusters such as new materialism-assemblages-post-humanism; indigenous archaeologies and epistemologies; gender-subjectivity-personhood; religion-ritual-ontology; environment-climate-coupled human/environment systems; emergent complexity. Ideal candidates will integrate theory and data in their research through innovative methodologies, including archaeometry, geoarchaeology, paleobotany, paleoclimatology, or zooarchaeology, among others. The candidate should possess holistic training in anthropology and be capable of linking their work to questions of cultural heritage, indigeneity, as well as the interests, concerns, and needs of descendant communities. They should have an active field and/or lab research program that can involve undergraduates and graduate students, and commitment to community collaborations. Demonstrated success in securing external research grants, conducting fieldwork, and publishing in refereed journals is preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to our Ph.D. program and will enhance and advance our leading research program in Andean studies, while showing promise to connect research and teaching with other units on campus. The teaching load is 2:2, which will include an Introduction to Archaeology course, taught on a rotating basis, occasional courses for the curriculum, and undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s research specialties. Research leave available in the fourth year. Lab-based archaeology classes with an experiential component will be viewed favorably. The successful candidate must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. no later than the start of the Fall 2021 semester.
