Dr. Barbara Piperata, Professor of Anthropology and Co-Director of the Human Biology Lab in the Department of Anthropology in collaboration with Dr. Jiyoung Lee, Professor of Environmental Health, College of Public Health, and Dr. Vanessa Hale, Assistant Professor, College of Preventative Veterinary Medicine are seeking a postdoctoral scholar to join their interdisciplinary and international project “Ecoculturing the Infant Gut Microbiome.”

Our 3-year project aims to understand how household water insecurity and infant routines, shaped by cultural norms and ideals, interact to shape the succession of the infant gut microbiome during the first two years of life. This NSF-funded study, currently underway, is being conducted in the city of Belém, located at the mouth of the Amazon river in northern Brazil. We seek an anthropologist or public health scholar. The ideal candidate will be trained in mixed methods and embrace interdisciplinary scholarship and training. Experience in the collection and/or analysis of microbiome data, strong laboratory and/or field skills, database management and knowledge of statistics and a record of published research are desired. Portuguese language ability is a plus, but not required.

The program, sponsored by the Office of the President, provides salary support and funds for research-related and program travel expenses. Each award is for a minimum of 24 months and the second year is awarded upon demonstration of academic and research productivity as well as adequate career development as evidenced by successful implementation of a mentoring plan.
